Most people have their ideas about what a gamer is. Many people believe gamers are children between the ages of 8 and 14. Advertising agencies believe that gamers are 90 percent male around 25 years of age. Some people think that handheld devices have completely taken over the industry, while others believe that consoles are more popular. Whatever you think you know about American gamers, you are probably wrong. The following facts come from EEDAR, the world’s largest market research firm in the video game industry.
- 59% of the population is some kind of gamer
- 51% of the population have one or more consoles in their home
- 68% of smartphone or tablet owners use them to play games
- The average age game-players in the U.S. is 31
- 29% of gamers are under 18
- 32% are between the ages of 18 and 35
- 39% are age 36 or older
- 55% of males and 45% of females use handheld consoles for gaming
- 60% of males and 40% of females use consoles for gaming
- 55% of females and 45% of males use mobiles for gaming
- 71% of mobile gamers spending more than $10 a month on gaming are male
- Both men and women report matching-puzzle and brain-puzzle games as their favorite for mobile
- On consoles, females prefer RPG, Action, Shooter, Arcade and Fighting games (in that order)
- On consoles, males prefer Action, Shooter, RPG, Fighting and Arcade (in that order)
- Most heavy gamers play on a combination of consoles, PC, tablets and mobile phones
- 39% of F2P PC players watch or participate in eSports
